down to the sea

On Sunday, Mr FD and I drove to the Sunshine Coast, because the for the last couple of weeks I had been experiencing a very strong desire to see the ocean. It was almost as though my soul, or my spirit, needed to see and hear and feel the ocean to survive.

So we drove up through the Brisbane Valley to the Sunshine Coast. We got to have our usual chuckle over some of the place names.

One can only wonder about the story behind the name!

We found our way to Mudjimba Beach, where neither Mr FD or I had ever been. Mudjimba is named from an Aboriginal word meaning “a small bush with sweet white green-spotted berries” and it is a delightful beach, perfect for rambling and renewing one’s spirit.

There was a lovely picnic area right next to the road

and down to the beach we went

The tiny island is called Old Lady Island and we are still wondering why!

    • The Australian Brush-turkey is everywhere. We even have them in our street! It is commonly called a bush or scrub turkey here and are not popular because they build nesting mounds and can destroy a garden in a day. I believe that it is not closely related to American turkey. They were walking around the picnic area and had a bit of a squabble over terrority and one retreated to a tree.

  1. Beautiful pictures…… I think the highlight of my vacation in Australia was a day relaxing on the beach with a friend. She’s from Queensland, and is always singing it’s praises.

My father, a native Californian, was transferred to Idaho just a few months before I was born. I have no memories of Twin Falls because it was too far from the beach, and he had to move back to at least within driving distance. He’s never lived more than an a couple of hours away since. He’s in his eighties now, and doesn’t swim in that very cold water anymore, but he still can’t go to long before driving out for a walk along the other side of the Pacific Ocean. I think he would enjoy Mudjimba.

    • I don’t like swimming in the ocean – as soon as something touches my leg I am out of there! But I seem to have a growing need to be near the sea, to hear it and smell it. It is restorative. We live about 2 hours drive from that particularbeach.

    • Well, you will insist on living on the wrong side of the world! We have had a lovely spring this year, no day has reached 30C yet, which is some sort of record for south east Queensland! Our summer officially starts December 1. Hope the weather pattern stays as it is!

    • Mr FD and I were debating last night whether it would be easy to land on it by boat… the idea sounds interesting, except that we don’t have a boat and Mr FD gets sea sick in the bath tub (as one would expect!).

  2. I’m so jealous, I live miles from a good beach, about as far inland as it’s possible to get in the UK. That looks like a fab day out and I’m so impressed that you have turkeys just wandering about, we don’t have turkeys wandering about!!

  3. This really looks like a perfect day at the beach. Had a great laugh about Mary’s street name, and had to show two of my co-workers. We all needed a laugh right now.
I just have to say that I am kind of surprised by the beach pictures I’ve seen from all you people down under, so far. Which seems to make it necessary that I have to re-evaluate my picture of Australian beach life. LOL

  4. Looks like you had so much fun! I’ve only been to one beach in L.A. It was about 70-80 degrees out and it was raining. But there we were body surfing on the waves. They were all looking at us like we were crazy. It was warm to us! How warm was it there? Looks like perfect weather there! I love the sail boats. XD
